    Purpose of Job

    Assists in work associated with planting and trimming of trees, irrigation systems maintenance, and general grounds work as associated with the overall tree care of City owned property. Requires the use of specialized equipment associated with tree trimming.

    Essential Job Duties

    Tree and lawn maintenance

    • Climbs trees, operates tree trimming and climbing equipment in a safe and effective manner; performs heavy manual labor in varied assignments.
    • Assists in propagating and cultivating a wide variety of trees and performs a wide range of gardening work, such as fertilizing different varieties of trees using root feeding and soil additive techniques; transplanting trees; pruning and trimming shrubs, trees, and other plants to remove defects and excess branches and to obtain a proper balance between roots and top growth; mows and trims lawns and lays mulch.
    • Assists in maintaining park trees; removal or pruning of all park trees; access both street and park trees: including spraying trees with pesticides. Assists in tree maintenance and removals throughout the parks system and city right-of-ways.

    Maintains and transports equipment

    • Performs general inspections of all equipment including fluids, belts, and blades before using.
    • Performs general maintenance of equipment including cleaning, greasing, and blade sharpening.
    • Cleans and maintains all equipment and work areas.
    • Loads and unloads all equipment for transportation to worksites.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a High School Diploma or GED, plus six months to one year of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Certifications: TN Driver’s License and CDL License

    • Assists in creating bedding and landscape plans; determines planting scheme, selects and purchases plants, bulbs, purchases seeds; sows, transplants, waters, and fertilizes plants, computes, orders, and makes substitutions for all required quantities of plants, seeds, and other materials and equipment required to perform the work.
    • Oversees growing and maintenance of a wide variety of plants and performs a wide range of gardening work, such as using proper pruning techniques on trees and shrubs, when needed, applying fertilizers and pesticides, installing new ornamental and seasonal color beds, correcting drainage and other erosion issues, and applying mulches as needed.

    Maintains and transports equipment

    Purpose of Job

    This position is responsible for the long-term care and management of City trees. Responsible for developing, administrating, and monitoring programs and policies with City’s tree and landscape.

    Essential Job Duties

    Consulting

    • Consults with landscape architect, builders, contractors, and developers to promote tree preservation in the preparation of construction plans and coordinates with City and commercial field inspectors to ensure project completion in accordance with plan specifications and acceptable tree protection during construction.
    • Serves as a consultant to homeowners, developers, architects, and other city staff on landscaping and tree preservation issues.
    • Writes warning letters and issues citations, in coordination with the Codes Administration Department, to developers and homeowners as necessary.

    Tree maintenance and safety training

    • Receives and investigates tree complaints; conducts field inspections of work completed and identifies problems with trees that require attention; conducts park tree inspections within the entire park system; ensures staff compliance with proper work methods consistent with the City’s policies and OSHA regulations.
    • Participates in the selection of staff; provides or coordinates staff safety training and skill enhancement training.
    • Supervises activities of crews.

    Public education

    • Presents lectures to community groups, students, and the general public.
    • Conducts various workshops and attends conferences to educate, train, and increase public awareness.
    • Acts as department liaison to City’s Tree Board and oversees Arbor Day Celebration and City’s Tree City USA designation.

    Urban forestry management

    • Participates in the preparation and administration of the Parks budget; submits budget recommendations; monitor expenditures and charges to all relevant accounts. Prepares accurate material and labor estimates for City projects as required.
    • Performs duties such as administering tree removal permits, investigating illegal tree removals, responding to and investigating citizen complaints, maintaining computerized inventory of construction projects subject to the landscape and tree preservation ordinance, applying for grants, recommends administering the tree bank, and supervises public tree plantings.
    • Prepares analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities including Work Order Reports.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through obtaining a Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university, plus two years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Required Certifications/Licenses:

    • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist

    Research Technician III - Turfgrass Research Plot Manager
    Regular Full-time, Pay Range MR03

    Faculty in the Turfgrass Science & Management program are seeking a passionate individual to join their team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintenance of turfgrass research plots at the East TN AgResearch & Education Center – Plant Sciences Unit (ETREC). Primary duties will include mowing of 12 acres of warm- and cool-season turfgrass research plots, managing irrigation on plot areas, application of crop protectants to control weed, disease, and insect pests on research plots, as well as administration of maintenance practices including (but not limited to) fertilization, topdressing, and cultivation. Additionally, the successful candidate will assist with construction/renovation projects reliant on turfgrass sod and/or sprigs. There is an expectation that this individual will interface with all turfgrass faculty programs to deliver surfaces of optimal quality that further research efforts at the facility. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to manage undergraduate student labor to achieve their goals in plot maintenance.  

    Requirements: 

    • General knowledge of management practices used to care for turfgrasses on golf courses, sports fields, and lawns.  Bachelors of Science degree preferred in Plant Sciences, Agronomy, Crop & Soil Science, Horticulture, or related field.
    • A successful candidate must have the ability to operate mowing equipment used to care for turfgrass on golf courses, sports fields, and lawns.
    • A successful candidate must have the ability to operate spray equipment used to care for turfgrass on golf courses, sports fields, and lawns.
    • A successful candidate must have the ability to conduct basic operational maintenance and repair of mowing, spray, and irrigation equipment used to care for turfgrass on golf courses, sports fields, and lawns.
    • Preference will be given to applicants with two years of experience working in the turfgrass industry, including one year of experience maintaining turfgrass on golf courses, sports fields, lawns, or sod farms.
    •  The position requires excellent written and oral communication skills as the plot manager is expected to communicate with turfgrass faculty to develop and implement a comprehensive management plan for the turfgrass research plots at ETREC. This will include maintaining inventory of supplies needed for plot maintenance and managing undergraduate student workers.

    Our Tennessee State Parks are among the most beautiful parks in the United States. We have an outstanding opportunity to work in a beautiful work environment at our Fall Creek Falls State Park in Spencer, TN. The Greenskeeper position is an integral component to the operations of the golf course. The person in this position will serve in a supervisory role, overseeing the maintenance crew in the upkeep and care of a championship 18-hole golf course.

    The Greenskeeper is required to be skilled in the operation of a variety of tools and equipment, such as greens mowers, fairway mowers, tee mowers, chemical sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, topdressing machines, soil aeration devices, earth moving equipment, and other vehicles. The preferred candidate has experience with operating irrigation systems and ensuring that these systems run at a standard to maintain high quality turfgrass on the course. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy, horticulture, or other agricultural field related to plant and soil science or turf management is preferred. Experience equivalent to three years of increasingly responsible and skilled full-time golf course maintenance work, including the care and maintenance of greens will be considered as a substitute for a degree.     Kings Creek Golf Course is an 18-hole Arnold Palmer Signature golf course located in Spring Hill, Tennessee. In 2020, Kings Creek Golf Course was purchased by local ownership and is now managed by Bobby Jones Links. The course consists of Tifeagle Bermudagrass greens and 419 Bermudagrass tees, fairways, and roughs.     The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent manages all aspects of the club’s agronomy operation. This position reports to the club’s Golf Course Superintendent.

    • Assists with the implementation of all fertilizer and pesticide programs.
    • Responsible for the operation of all maintenance equipment, along with calibration and operation of each.
    • Maintains a safe work environment for all agronomy associates, providing regular training to them in this area.
    • Assists in overseeing all capital improvements to the golf course.

    Human Resources

    • Hires and trains all maintenance personnel.
    • Makes certain every new agronomy employee reads the Bobby Jones Associate Handbook and signs an acknowledgement that they did.
    • Makes certain every new agronomy employee views Bobby Jones Links’s orientation and customer service video and takes the corresponding tests within 14 days of hiring.
    • Ensures every new agronomy associate receives a written job description and a copy of the Bobby Jones Links Associate Card.
    • Regularly recognizes exemplary associate accomplishment through the rewarding of Grand Slam awards.
    • Follows all State, Federal, and Bobby Jones Links rules in regard to human resources including such key policies as hiring and firing, discrimination, and harassment.
