    Assistant Mechanic
    Vanderbilt Legends Club

    Reports To: Mechanic

    Position Purpose:
    The Assistant Mechanic assists and/or works assisting the Mechanic in the repairing and maintenance of various gasoline- and diesel-powered golf course maintenance equipment. The Assistant Mechanic also assists in maintaining a clean service area and maintenance building, contributes to a preventative maintenance program, and places safety procedures as a top priority.

    General Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Communicates any needs or problems relating to maintenance or repair of equipment with the equipment manager and/or assistant superintendent.
    • Provide the technical knowledge needed to keep the golf course equipment operating efficiently.
    • Perform maintenance repairs on equipment as directed/needed; inspect and adjust mowers daily. Perform field inspections of equipment.
    • Maintain effective communications within the department, both oral and written. Maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees.
    • Communicate questions or concerns to Supervisor as necessary.
    • Ensure work area is kept clean and neat; ensure proper care and storage of tools. Assist operators in adding fuel, oil and proper greasing of equipment.
    • Foster a safe work environment at all times.
    • Working knowledge of golf course maintenance equipment and repair practices including: gasoline, diesel, and electric motor repair. Hydraulic and hydrostatic transmission repair, grinding, back lapping and adjusting reels.
    • Must be polite and friendly to players and guests; always projecting a professional image.
    • Will help the grounds crew out in times of need.
    • Must be able to work every other weekend.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    • No supervisory responsibilities.
    • Experience / Education / Certification Requirements:
    • High School education or its equivalent.
    • Must have valid driver’s license.
    • Must have knowledge of mechanical tools, safety procedures and equipment repair.
    • Experience with John Deere and Toro equipment is a plus.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. to waist height.
    • Constant bending, turning, keeling and stooping.
    • Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, fumes, exhaust and environmental conditions.
    • Must be able to stand for extended periods.
    • Must be able to operate gas powered golf equipment and maintenance equipment in a safe manner.
    • Normal vision and hearing ranges required.

    Salary

    • Dependent on experience.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Responsible for all activities related to the care and maintenance of golf course, grounds and equipment

    Assistant Superintendent
    Lake Barkley State Resort Park
    Cadiz, KY

    Lake Barkley State Resort Park is located in Western Kentucky near Cadiz Kentucky.  This Larry Packard designed 18-hole golf course has USGA greens with Penncross bentgrass turf soon to be converted in summer of 2020 to Tifeagle Ultrdwarf Bermudagrass.  Tees, fairways and primary rough are Tifway II bermudagrass and secondary rough is warm and cool season grasses.  Another exciting project happening in the near future is the complete restoration/mitigation of Blue Spring Creek, a beautiful spring fed creek that drains the entire area through the golf course into Lake Barkley.  Not only will this creek be an environmental masterpiece, but it will also enhance a number of the golf holes.  This project is being led by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.  While the work will be entirely contracted out, the Superintendent and golf staff will gain unique experience throughout the process.    More info about the course can be found at:  https://parks.ky.gov/golf/courses/lake-barkley/ 

    Supervises, trains and assists a group of maintenance personnel in the performance of routine care and maintenance work for an 18 or a 27-hole golf course under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent II. Assigns and supervises mowing of all turf areas, and the performing of all agronomic practices required to manage a golf course. Inspects machinery and equipment to determine their operating condition and repair needs. Purchases supplies for the park and golf course. Performs public relations functions. Maintains operating records and makes reports of park and golf activities. Prepares reports, summaries and recommendations pertaining to golf course development.

    Some travel required for turf and department meetings and conferences.  Overtime and weekends required periodically.  Salary based on education and experience. 

    Educational Requirements

    Post secondary education, vocational or technical training in turf management, agronomy, horticulture or related field will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.

    Barren River State Resort Park Golf Course is located on Barren River Lake near Bowling Green Kentucky. Golf course has Penncross bentgrass greens with Midiron bermuda tees fairways and rough. Layout consists of highly wooded terrain in addition to a number of holes that traverse a peninsula with lake views throughout.     Memphis National Golf Club is currently seeking a 1st Assistant Superintendent.  The club is a 36-hole facility with over 700 members and is located in Collierville, TN.  Both courses have Champion Bermuda greens, however the layouts are completely different.  Champions course is a continuous 18-hole layout that offers tree lined fairways and smaller greens, while the Legends course is more open, but still demanding off the tee with larger greens.  The two courses offer members different challenges and experiences each time out.  In 2017 the club completed a capital improvement project, which included a complete re-design and renovation of bunkers.  Several drainage projects were also completed, which enhanced the design and playability of several holes.  The club has local owners who are committed to improving the property each day in order to remain successful in the Memphis Golf Market.   

    The 1st Assistant must be a motivated individual with a strong passion for the golf business.  As a key member of the maintenance team, the assistant reports directly to the superintendent and oversees daily operations and agronomic practices each day.  A strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize effectively are critical for this position.

    2nd Assistant Superintendent

    Five Oaks Golf and Country Club is in search of a motivated and hard-working individual who is looking to advance themselves in the golf course industry to fill our 2ndAssistant position.  Must be able to communicate and work well in a team environment. 

    The right candidate will work along side the Superintendent and 1stAssistant daily in all aspects of golf course maintenance.  Five Oaks has come under new ownership in the last 30 days and with that comes many new ideas and course improvement projects.   They have approved a few course improvements that we will begin over the winter months. 

    Some experience with spraying, irrigation/drainage, course setup is preferred but not required.  But eye for detail is a must.
